BURN-OUT PREVENTION
No Burn Out!
Prevent overstrain and burnout
October 15, 2024, De Telegraaf headlined:
“Mental distress among employees is increasing:
a quarter say they are on the verge of burnout!”
So you are not alone!
Due to the enormous staff shortages in the business world, the workload for employees only increases. And too much workload can lead to too much work stress. But also in people's private lives, various causes, such as relationship or financial problems, can lead to stress that lasts too long.
Stress itself is fine; it makes you alert and capable of peak performance. Adrenaline and cortisol are stress hormones that help you focus better and produce more.
Danger of action hormones
After this performance, your body should return to the relaxed situation as quickly as possible. And that is where it often goes wrong: because you have to perform at the top level all the time, your body and mind eventually just stay on all the time. This “on” means that various biochemical stress processes take place in your body with a peak in action hormones that are released to be able to perform at the top. This allows you to perform very well for a long time at first. But these action hormones are also dangerous and over time they cause your health to deteriorate, as well as your resistance and your performance.
In Search of Homeostasis
The body always strives for a rest situation, for balance; homeostasis. If the body is constantly “on”, this means that the body is no longer able to recover sufficiently from stress. And that is dangerous and leads to all kinds of mental and physical complaints such as brooding, poor concentration, gloom, exhaustion, headaches, back pain, anxiety or panic attacks, sleep problems and so on.

Reimbursement by your employer?
A burnout is not only a problem that concerns the employee but also the employer. An employer also has a responsibility towards its employees. You do not solve a burnout by taking a break and staying on sick leave for a few weeks, after which it 'will pass'.
The employer also has obligations. These obligations are laid down in the Gatekeeper Improvement Act. This is to ensure that you as an employee can quickly get back to work. Your obligations are also laid down in this law. These obligations exist if you are already on sick leave with burnout complaints. But because burnout is not included in the DSM, health insurers do not reimburse the costs. Burnout falls under occupational diseases, which means that the employer is responsible and must pay the costs of recovery. The Gatekeeper Act ensures that the rule: 'he who pays, decides' does not apply.
It is therefore much better to work together to prevent you from ending up at home with burnout!
And not only because of the sky-high costs (an employee with burnout complaints can quickly cost an organization around € 120,000), but also because your absence will create an even greater staff shortage.
For all these reasons, your employer may be willing to reimburse (part of) the costs of the stress profile and the five-day continuous analysis.
In addition, it is very important that you talk to your employer to do something about your workload.
Of course, it may also be that you find it difficult to discuss this with your employer. In that case, we can also play a major role for you, if you want us to.
